The Tempest
With this production of the Tempest, I posed a new challenge to what is basically a very accomplished group of veterans. We staged the action to give the idea that these characters are really trapped on an island by having all of the actors within the limits of the stage at all times and not exiting off stage. It is a concept that would intimidate even adult actors, but these children had already taken on Shakespeares verse and delivered it eloquently in the past, so I knew that they could handle physical challenges as well.
The greatest compliment that we as a company receive is when audience members say I understood this play for the first time! I think that our productions are clear because the kids have really delved into the text and understand what they are trying to communicate and therefore they do so in a simple and intelligible way. I believe that this production was a visual delight as well as a feast for the ears. It is Shakespeares last play and full of some of his most beautiful passages. We trust that we did it justice.
