ShrewAll's Well That Ends Well
The basics are simple: the low-born lass, Helena, falls in love with her childhood companion, Bertram, who has grown up to be a Count. She cures the sick King of France and as her reward gets to choose a husband from among the lords in his court. Naturally she chooses Bertram, but it turns out he does not love her and is outraged when the King forces him to marry her. He swears never to be her husband in actuality and runs away to join the wars in Tuscany. Despairing that she is the cause that he is now in danger of being killed, Helena also steals away... All's well that ends well in that girl gets boy, but the path she uses to get there is pretty risky, hence our theme is one of playing cards. Done in Baroque style, our version takes place in a court similar to that of the Sun King, using popular music of the day and high white wigs!
